In our reading from Acts (17:22-31) St Paul speaks to the people of Athens. As he speaks he is surrounded by statues and temples but doesn’t openly condemn their gods but instead notices their altar to an unknown God. Paul uses this as an opportunity to speak of the living God: a God who is not distant or remote and neither is confined to buildings made by human hands. He speaks of God who is near to every person giving life, breath and meaning to all.

Modern life is full of many distractions. There are many idols which seek to claim our attention. We are tempted by the idols of success, wealth, materialism, popularity or self-seeking. Paul’s message speaks clearly. We were created to know God and to seek him above all things. This calling we have through Christ Jesus summons us into new life.

Perhaps we need to be aware of our own idols; the things which claim our attention. What comes between us and wholeheartedly seeking to follow Christ and walking in his footsteps day by day?
