Harvest is a time to give thanks for the food on our tables and the people whose work makes it possible. It also invites us to look beyond the celebration and consider the pressures faced by farming communities.
In his September Parish Life reflection, written in mid-August, Fr Simon Ward describes the effect of a long, dry summer on crops, livestock and those who depend on the land for their livelihood. His message asks us to hold gratitude and concern together as we prepare for Harvest.
Creation entrusted to our care
For Christians, the world is God’s gift. We are entrusted with its care for a time, with a responsibility to use its resources wisely and remember our neighbours. The effects of changing weather are felt particularly sharply by people with fewer resources to adapt, including those whose livelihoods depend on the land.
Fr Simon encourages a practical response: reducing waste, making thoughtful choices, praying for those affected and being willing to change our habits. These everyday decisions are part of living out our faith.
Join us for Harvest at the Minster
Our Harvest Festival is on Sunday 27 September 2026, with Holy Communion at 10.30am, followed by a bring-and-share lunch at 11.30am.
Gifts of tins, pasta, cereal and toiletries are welcome. Together, we can turn thanksgiving into practical generosity and remember those for whom a shared meal or a gift of essentials makes a difference.
