Going to a new church for the first time or attending worship as a new Christian and novice worshipper might seem a little daunting before your visit. But rest assured all our Parish churches are friendly places with hospitable congregations.

When entering one of our parish Churches you will be greeted by a member of the team. Feel free to tell them that it is your first time attending and they can offer you additional support. You will be given an order of service, a weekly notice sheet and, if it’s a sung eucharist, a hymn book.

You can then make your way into the church and take a seat wherever you feel comfortable. Be aware there will be seats reserved for the choir, so be sure not to sit in those seats.

We will then follow the order of service, which will differ depending on the time of year. During a Eucharist or Holy Communion service, you will have the opportunity to have a shared meal of bread and wine. If you’ve done this at another Christian church before, you are more than welcome to join us.

Do I have to take part?

We encourage you to take part, whether that be in singing or praying, but there is no pressure to. Do as much or as little as you are comfortable with.

Do I have to pay to attend a service?

No! There will be a collection during the service, but this is optional.

Is there a dress code?

No! Come as you are.

What is the order of service?

Order of service is exactly that. It will tell you what will happen during the service. It will tell you what will be said and what YOU should say (bold text), but only if you feel comfortable.

What is the weekly notice sheet?

The weekly notice sheet contains all services and events happening in the next week. It will also have a reflection section usually written by the parish team and a notice section with any important notices that need to be shared. You can take the notice sheet away with you.

What’s a hymn book?

During a Sung Eucharist, there will usually be about 5 hymns that you can sing along with if you feel comfortable. The hymn numbers can be found on the wall towards the front. You’ll see this when you take your seat before the service. Whoever is leading the service will usually announce the hymn number before we sing. Usually, we all stand to sing, but only if you are able.

I have more questions!

The Christianity website here has a good article telling newcomers what to expect from their first experience. You can also contact us, we will be happy to answer any other questions.
